International Overdose Awareness Day 2024

Written by Markita Wilburn, PharmD

August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), a global campaign to end overdose. It is a day to remember, without stigma, those who have died and to acknowledge the grief of their family and friends.

Pennsylvania has approved the use of Medical Marijuana as a support and alternative recovery option for those impacted by Opioid Use Disorder. At Maitri Medicinals, we are committed to positively impacting our community through education because the more we know, the stronger we become.

All drugs can cause an overdose, including those prescribed by a doctor. The mere overconsumption or misuse of prescription medications has led to an increase in illicit drug use, further leading to potentially fatal overdoses.

As cannabis advocates, we believe it’s important to clarify that cannabis is not a drug — it’s a plant with an abundance of benefits. Legally, we are restricted to calling it ‘Medical Marijuana,’ but its potential reaches far beyond its label.

The theme for IOAD 2024 is "TOGETHER WE CAN," highlighting the power of our community when we all stand together. Though the use of medical marijuana is frowned upon as alternative support to all narcotics, we would like to highlight it as a viable choice.

Consuming strains high in beta-caryophyllene may help manage withdrawal symptoms like irritability, nausea, vomiting, pain, and mood swings, while limonene can elevate the mood and boost energy to tackle a new day. If you would rather avoid the stimulating factor THC produces when it’s consumed, CBD may also be highly supportive in the treatment of substance use abuse. A systemic review suggests that CBD showed a positive impact on the frequency and quantity of consumption of opioids. Though more research is needed, CBD has proven to lower the cravings for opiates.
