Finding Connection and Healing: My Experience at 412Thrive’s Annual Retreat
Written by: Heather Zuzo, RPh
In September, I had the incredible opportunity to attend 412Thrive’s 2024 Annual Retreat, a weekend dedicated to individuals affected by breast cancer. While the shared experience of facing this disease brought us together, I quickly realized that each person’s journey was unique.
A Weekend of Connection and Fun
From the moment I arrived, I felt an overwhelming sense of community and support. The weekend was thoughtfully organized—not just informative but deeply healing. We were assigned to cabins in groups of eight, fostering camaraderie as we participated in a variety of activities together.
The retreat was the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. We zipped through the trees on a zipline, tried crafting, and even had professional photos taken to capture the friendships we were forming. These moments of joy were balanced with meaningful conversations about our individual experiences with breast cancer.
A Growing Interest in Medical Marijuana
One of the highlights of the weekend was an educational session on medical marijuana, which opened the door to some enlightening conversations. It was exciting to see so many attendees interested in using cannabis as part of their treatment journey. Popular consumption methods among the group included flower, vapes, and troches, showing a variety of preferences.
As I spoke with fellow attendees, it became clear that the stigma around marijuana is rapidly diminishing. Some participants were there to learn about its benefits, while others were just beginning to explore how medical marijuana could fit into their health routine. This shift reflects the growing acceptance of alternative therapies, empowering more people to take control of their health.
Real Conversations, Real Needs
After the session, one woman approached me after hearing I was a dispensary pharmacist. She wanted guidance on helping her daughter obtain a medical marijuana card, highlighting the personal journeys families undertake when considering medical cannabis as a treatment option.
During our conversation, we discussed the difference between THC and CBD, the two primary cannabinoids in cannabis. While THC is known for its psychoactive effects, CBD offers therapeutic benefits without causing a euphoric high. Understanding these distinctions helps patients make informed decisions about their treatment, which is essential in finding what works best for their individual needs.
The Power of Shared Experiences
Listening to my cabinmates share their stories was both humbling and healing. While each of us had faced the realities of breast cancer, we found solace in each other’s company. These candid conversations normalized the challenges we experienced, reminding us that we were not alone in this fight.
Healing Together
Throughout the weekend, I learned not only about new coping strategies but also about the power of community in the healing process. The laughter, shared tears, and moments of vulnerability helped create connections that went far beyond the surface.
The retreat was more than a discussion of treatments and side effects—it was a celebration of resilience. We left with not only new knowledge but also friendships and a renewed sense of hope.
Conclusion
My experience at the 412Thrive retreat was a beautiful reminder of the importance of connection, support, and community in the healing process. While breast cancer brought us together, it was our shared experiences, laughter, and willingness to uplift one another that made the weekend truly special.
